Elberton Police Chief Mark Welsh said that although a new city ordinance concerning parking downtown goes into effect Sept. 14, city police will not enforce it until Oct. 1 “in order to educate the public.”

One of the new conditions added to the ordinance that prohibits any person who is an on-duty employee, owner or operator of a business from parking in certain timed parking zones.

The purpose of the ordinance is to ensure that parking is available for customers of the businesses located on the square.

No time limit parking spaces will be located on the north side of Church Street and east of McIntosh Street.

Welsh said he wants to “give people time to become used to it.”
