Elbert County School Board Chairman Ben Baker said in a work session Monday night he would like to have someone trained and permitted for using a weapon at all the schools in the Elbert County school system.
“With all that’s going on I think the time has come for us to make sure we have someone trained,” Baker told the board.
Currently Security Director Shayne Bennett carries a weapon at Elbert County Comprehensive High School, but under Baker’s plan each school in the system would have a person who would be trained and who would be permitted to carry a weapon on school grounds.
Additionally, the school system will be looking into a identification system for all schools in which each visitor’s personal ID will be scanned and school personnel will be able to know who is in the schools at all times.
Finally, the school board discussed a classroom camera and audio enhancement system for four classrooms at the high school.
Baker asked School Superintendent Chuck Bell to consider putting the camera/audio enhancement system in the newly renovated Special Education classroom at the high school.
